Start School Later

I think it is still not too late to wish all of you a Happy New Year!

We are going to kick off this year's journal writing with the title "Start School Later". The newspaper article titled "Start School Later and Let Children Sleep Longer" (Straits Times, Fri 9 Jan 09) got my attention as I was reading the papers that day.

The writer gave the reason that children in S'pore are not having enough sleep because they have to wake up very early in the morning to get ready to go to school. Some children do not mind skipping breakfast just to have another 5 to 10 minutes of extra sleep. Does that happen to you, too? You must remember that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Drinking a glass of milk or hot drink is good enough if you can't eat anything, but please do not come to school with an empty stomach.

The writer also suggested that one way schools can start early is to get bus drivers to ferry workers first before picking up school children as the concern was that these bus drivers had to rush school children off to school because they need to ferry workers to factories. This would mean that schools then would really start later, say, 9am.

I would really like to hear your views on this. Perhaps, you can even suggest ways on how schools can really start later. You may refer to the newspaper article that was given to you and make some references to it.

In the meantime, I will still see all of you at 7.30am every morning! And, please, have at least 8 hours of sleep....zzzzzzzz
